How Sunless Tanning Works
The Science of DHA

Basic chemistry is the Great Oz behind the curtain of sunless tanning. Dihydroxyacetone known as DHA is a simple carbohydrate that is often derived from fermenting the glycerin from sugar cane or beets. When DHA is applied to the skin, it reacts with your bodies’ amino acids producing a pigmentation change in the stratum corneum or outermost layer of the skin. The chemical reaction creates the color change, which provides the popular tanning effect.

DHA sunless tans look natural, and only affect the outermost layer of the skin, so the tan fades gradually as your skin exfoliates. Sunless tans typically last 4-7 days. DHA sunless products can be effectively applied in a wide variety of sunless cocktails ranging from lotions, gels, mousses, sprays, to cosmetic wipes.
DHA does not damage the skin, and is considered a safe skin colorant and nutritional supplement. The FDA, the Canadian Health Ministry, and most of the EU member nations have approved DHA for use in cosmetic products.
DHA-based sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, American Academy of Dermatology Association, Canadian Dermatology Association and the American Medical Association.
